The focus of this review was to look at productivity throughout the departments in particular, how to streamline procedures to maximise efficiency. Suggested measures and recommendations for both Housekeeping teams will not only save time but also help save costs.

Participants learned how to design a critical path for a project; they then gained skills in writing a report and had to present their winning proposal to the group. They also were taught tips and techniques on how to “Manage their Manager”. During the afternoon session, Guest Speaker, Ms Virginia Tam who is currently General Manager of Harbour Plaza North Point explained how she made her career path from Housekeeping to General Manager. Virginia’s insights into how she climbed the corporate ladder inspired the group as did the sharing of best practice which ended the session.

Swire Hotels 2nd boutique property, The Upper House; an intriguing brand featuring stunning views and huge bathrooms opened at Pacific Place in Hong Kong on 1st October 2009. L&A Director, Liz Lycette, spent a full 2 weeks assisting the Housekeeping team of the 117 room Upper House with training and set up of the overall Housekeeping operation. With over 65 different amenity items in every guest room, Liz offered support including training of welcome tea service, room cleaning sequence and how to clean and maintain the beautiful natural elements throughout the property.

In the rooms, from the 38th floor to the 48th floor, floor surfaces include solid ash wood floors from Germany, honed limestone and beautiful wool/silk carpets. With an average room size of 730 sq feet, the bathroom is as big as the living and sleeping area and the Housekeeping Room Attendants have a lot to remember like the wooden shoe trees, the yoga mats or the complimentary maxi-bar items. Technology training is also important as every room features a state of the art coffee maker and an iPod touch instead of the standard room service menu. This means that all Housekeeping staff members have to be up to date with the latest workings and techno savvy to help out the guests when required.

This is cutting edge hospitality and L&A are very proud to have been a part of the opening team at The Upper House and look forward to more Swire Hotels success stories.
