SEQPHA Breakfast at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast
It was great to attend the South East Queensland Professional Housekeepers Association breakfast and networking event held at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast on Tuesday 3rd June from 7.00am. Despite the early start, the 5o+ attendees had a terrific opportunity to catch up and exchange ideas on best practice in their operations. There was a lucky draw with many great prizes from suppliers along with a short presentation by the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation.
The very delicious breakfast was followed by a tour of some of the Palazzo Versace rooms. The Hotel looks amazing for 15 years old and the rooms have many very special touches including black pool towels and bathrobes, fabulous intricate wooden parquetry floors and a big minibar setup which housekeeping take care of.
New technology – LED light transmissive carpets by Desso and Philips
LED light transmissive carpets are there to provide information, direction, inspiration and safety in offices, hotels and public buildings.
Royal Philips and Desso – global leaders in lighting and carpets respectively – have announced a partnership agreement to develop solutions that combine LED lighting with light transmissive carpet. This innovation will further unlock the potential of LED integration into surfaces and adds an exciting dimension to interior design and space planning. The solution will transform the way people interact with information and their environment in offices, hotels, conference centers and other public buildings.
Walsh Integrated – Inspection software
While Liz was at the ISSA show In Las Vegas late 2013 she met up with the team on the Walsh Integrated stand and was introduced to their QA inspector systems. The company was formed in 1992 and was originally designed to conduct cleaning inspections on mobile devices for hospitals. It has since grown and now services hotels, aged care facilities and schools along with the original hospitals. Click Here To Read More
SEQPHA Trade Show coming up Friday 8th August from 1.00pm
The South East Queensland Professional Housekeepers Association will be hold a Trade Show on Friday 8th August 2014 from 1.00pm – 5.00pm at Sea World Nara Resort and Water Park on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
Industry suppliers will be exhibiting their products and services for the Hospitality & Tourism Industry from 1.00pm. There will be a Cocktail Party, tree to all Property Managers, Housekeepers, Management & Purchasing and Exhibitors from 4.00pm.
Clean the World Hong Kong – Grand Opening of HK Soap Recycling Centre
Clean the World rolled out the red carpet at a new Recycling Operations Center in Hong Kong on Wednesday. This new, expanded facility is outfitted with a complete production line to turn discarded hotel soap into clean new bars. Soap from hotel partners in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore will flow into the Hong Kong facility.
Along with founder Shawn Seipler and chief strategy officer Michael O’Quinn, Clean the World Asia managing director Jolene Han welcomed guests and provided tours of the facility. Visitors included executives from The Peninsula Hong Kong and Sands Macau.

What are the big trends in outsourcing?
There is a significant global shift in Housekeeping operations from internally run operations to using an outsourcing contractor/ agency. The main reason for this is that hotels are unable to find a ready pool of qualified staff and there is also a trend by senior hotel management to focus on working with clear and finite costs within the housekeeping operation.

America and Europe have been leading the way with the chemical free cleaning system, Tersano lotus Pro . This is now available in Australia. Many thousands of hotel rooms around the world are being cleaned on a daily basis with this environmental and safe cleaning solution .
How does it work?
Ozone is a naturally occurring gas produced in the upper atmosphere by ultraviolet light from the sun. It comprises nothing more than three oxygen atoms in the form of O3.
Oxygen in this form is very unstable and it looks to shed the extra atom at the earliest possible opportunity. In the simplest of terms, it is this property that makes ozone outstanding at killing bacteria, viruses and fungi spores and at oxidizing odours, stains and dirt. Lotus PRO technology creates ozone artificially by utilising an electrical charge and then infuses it into water creating stabilised aqueous ozone.

Cleaning without chemicals – an update
There have been several developments in the world of Housekeeping with relation to cleaning without chemicals. These include exclusive use of microfibre, combined use of microfibre and steam in hospitals and advances in nanotechnology for surfaces.
Microfibre only - Radisson Blu in Sydney Australia is now in its 6th year of using only microfibre and water in the cleaning of their guest rooms and public areas. Maureen Jolowicz, the Executive Housekeeper and also President of the Professional Housekeepers Association of NSW has maintained the overall system she first started in 2008 with some modifications. Novility bringing technology into the world of housekeeping training
A recent study carried out by The Hague Hotel School found that cleanliness of bedrooms and bathrooms was the most important factor for guests in their opinion of a property and their decision to leave negative online reviews. The study also showed that for 70% of hotel guests, hygiene is the ultimate factor in their decision to recommend a property. Figures like these should be enough to shock any hotelier into realizing that good performance in housekeeping is non-negotiable and an integral part to any successful hotel.
