Recycling soap to save lives: 2 metric tons of used soap collected in Sands China

images0-2013_News_release_Photo_178803964I wonder what they do with that bar of soap from the hotel room?” This simple question has led to an initiative of recycling soap to save lives. Thousands of hotels worldwide discard over three million bars of soap into landfills and incinerators every single day. Meanwhile, thousands of children around the world die from hygiene-related illnesses that can be prevented by simply washing with a bar of soap.
“How do we put the soap into the hands of those who need it the most?” asked Shailesh Adhav, Managing Director of Clean the World-Asia, at a promotional event held in the back of house area at Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central yesterday. “Many have thought about what happens to the bar of soap, but they don’t do anything, because it is like boiling the ocean. It’s an amazing task to try to accomplish, and one person alone can’t do it. It’s the strength of taking very simple actions together and saying, ‘how can we find the right partners?’”

The Power of Steam

Steam_CleaningIn the accommodation industry, presentation is paramount. First impressions are everything and guests are quick to make judgements about the cleanliness of their accommodation. But appearances can be deceptive. Some cleaning methods are only ‘skin deep’ and what you see is not necessarily what you get. The old mop and bucket days are well gone but many traditional methods of cleaning may provide the “presentation” but not the “cleanliness”. Straight vacuums, for example, merely produce a top surface clean rather than the necessary deep clean. Vacuuming only lightly picks up surface dirt, when the actual odour-causing grime, dirt and soil is deep down.

Outsourcing

outsourcing 2Outsourcing is an increasingly attractive option for accommodation providers. To many accommodation providers there is an aversion towards outsourcing of management functions, like revenue management or cleaning duties. It seems acceptable to outsource reservations or  land and building maintenance functions, why not other areas? There are very real advantages that come with outsourcing. Click Here To Read More

Quality, little waste and easy control – what everyone wants – Dispensers

dispensers2The revolution in amenity dispensers is widely accepted by today’s environmentally conscious guests and enables accommodation managers to provide guests with what they also prefer to use at home: liquid soap, body washes and high quality shampoos in stylish dispensers.

There are a huge number of benefits that comes from using dispensers instead of the traditional portion control amenities in guest rooms. The most obvious benefit is the drastic reduction of waste.

Australian Carpet by Allan Firth, Executive Director of the Carpet Institute of Australia Limited.

carpet institute of australiaThe Australian hospitality sector is fortunate to have a strong carpet manufacturing industry to draw on and realise its flooring décor visions. Carpet is by far the most popular and versatile floor covering solution on the market. And it’s easy to see why:

Décor Versatility – complement the existing décor theme – or create an entirely new one – from the extensive range of carpet styles, surface textures and constructions.

Warmth – a carpet’s surface temperature is substantially higher than that of a hard surface tile thanks to reduced heat dissipation. Carpet gives a soft, warm, cosy feeling. It therefore provides a more comfortable working environment.

Comfort – soft floor coverings such as carpet result in less postural discomfort than standing on hard surfaces.

Bring me a wigwam, please – Article by Susan Kurosawa, Editor, Travel & Indulgence, The Australian

Susan KurosawaWe want hotels to mother us and if not exactly tuck us in, then make us feel nursery-safe and properly cared for.  LAST weekend’s Departure Lounge (‘‘Hotels need to lighten up’’) has provoked a flurry of emails from readers who share my dark thoughts about not being able to read in guestrooms as bedside lighting is too dim or poorly positioned or to work out which switch does what in high-tech chambers at so-called hip hotels. Duvets are a real issue, it appears. Too hot is the verdict. Often plonked on without a top sheet is another complaint. ‘‘Bring back blankets!’’ is the pitiful cry in the tossing-and-turning wilderness.  Click Here To Read More
