Visit to the Clean the World facility in Las Vegas USA and help for Typhoon Haiyan survivors

Clean the world site visitDuring her trip to Las Vegas, Liz took the opportunity to visit the Clean the World soap recycling centre. It was amazing to see the massive quantity of soap and small bottles waiting to be sorted and sent onto the processing plant in Orlando. The Hygiene Kit started in 2009 has been very popular and has been distributed to some of the 600,000 homeless in the US. The new soap processing machine is nearly up and running and will be able to process and create 80,000 bars of recycled soap today. Liz also met some of the volunteers at the facility. Their role is critical in sorting the items and preparing hygiene kits which contain a soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion also with brand new toothbrush, toothpaste and wash cloth. smallerCleaning clinical areas without chemicals – an overview

Monash Health (formerly Southern Health) is undergoing a major change in environmental cleaning. The technology being implemented across the entire health service uses microfibre and steam and is based on the findings of a pilot study conducted at Monash Health in 2011. This was undertaken in a 32 bed acute ward and a 60 bed aged care ward and the details of the pilot have been published elsewhere.1

The health service has around 2150 inpatient beds, employs 500 cleaning staff and more than 13,000 clinical and support staff. Over 8,000 babies are born each year and more than 250 programs and services are delivered.

Going Green, One Hotel Towel at a Time

towel signA global collection of towel cards tells you how to be green in a thousand earnest, helpful (and downright weird) ways.  By Peter Mandel.

Three stars, four stars–whatever its constellation, the hotel chain of your choice wants you to know that it is a lot like you.  It may be a mass of buildings, elevator buttons and brass-plated trolleys for bags.  But it is special.  A brick-and-mortar being with a heart.  Starwood Hotels have a personalized menu for pillow puffiness, after all.  Even a Motel 6 has its particular brand of lotion and shampoo.

The bathroom is where your hotel’s earnest personality really begins to beam.  Cheerful cardboard pop-ups bloom next to the sink (“Did You Forget Your Toothbrush?”), a truly clean toilet shows off its prestigious plastic strip, and a placard near the towels cordially invites you to step up and Save the Planet.
